No Sleep Option

I just did a clean install (RC1) on a new hard disk in a computer that
previously used XP (with the ability to put the computer to "sleep"). On
this computer, in Vista, there is no sleep option anywhere. (The power
button offers to turn the computer off; "sleep" is greyed out on the fuller
list of options (such as restart). Under "Power options--advanced setting"
there is no option to sleep, nor can one define the power button to do
anything other than shut down, and the sleep button has only a "do nothing"
option.)
In the BIOS, Power management/APM is enabled and all the other ACPI
settings seem correct. In "Device Manager--System Devices" it shows as
working properly settings such as "ACPI Sleep Button," "Microsoft
ACPI-Compliant System" and "ATK0110 ACPI Utility."
Any ideas as to what the problem might be?

Hi,

If you try using power management in both Windows and the system BIOS, they
will often conflict. Try disabling PM in the BIOS and see if Vista allows
for further configuration. It may also be that while the BIOS is ACPI
compliant, one or more devices or their drivers are not fully compatible
with the sleep function. Updating to manufacturer-supplied drivers may or
may not resolve it.

this is often caused by missing graphic card drivers.
update your graphic card's drivers to the latest version from the
manufacturer's website.

That's very helpful, Hal9000. It suggests I have one problem, not two, as
Vista isn't recognizing my nvidia card (even though the hardware is sending a
video signal--that I can set to 1280x1024--through that card), much less
allowing me to install drivers, as Hal9000 suggests. [See

For the meantime, I'm back to XP SP2, which has no problem with the nvidia
card, or its drivers.
This does help me narrow my quest, so thanks!
