I am working on a problem that may be way over my head.
XP professional system - I am getting a message "no signal
or input cable disconnected" during start up (boot time?).
I never get the desktop!
I had this system built for me by a local retailer. Who is
a long distance from where I now live(move).
Is there anything I can check to determine if I need to
take everything( desktop+keyboard+monitor+printer)or if I
can take fewer components.
This may be a dumb question but I am a relative beginner
and I thank you in advance for your patience.

Your display settings may be inappropriate for your monitor.
Press F8 repeatedly during the early boot stage, then select
"Safe Mode".

When in Safe Mode, right-click any blank spot on the desktop,
select Properties, Settings, then reduce your resolution to
800 x 600. Now reboot and see if it works.

Am I correct to understand that the system didn't work any longer after you
moved?
Check all connection from the PC to the monitor. Possibly there is a
problrem with either one of the connectors on the cable connecting boths
devices or with the cable itself.
Give us brand/model/type of Monitor. Tell us whether it is a normal db15
connector ( shown in pictue here)
http://www.winfordeng.com/products/con15.php

Or do you have a USB connected Monitor: as shown here:
http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/usb_adapters.html

Try the cable on another system ( friend/neighbour) or use another cable to
check your monitor at home.
