Usually it's because the graphics card is not outputting to the

Here's a question: Does the monitor eventually display correctly after the
machine begins to boot? My monitor ALWAYS displays a message telling me "No
signal. Check the cable" when I first apply power (by turning on the
powerstrip to which everything is connected.) But it goes away once the
video card boots and registers and the machine begins to go through the
POST.
As far as I know, this is normal for my monitor. It appears that my monitor
powers up a few seconds BEFORE the video card and computer does: thus, the
temporary "no signal" message. Probably, if you don't apply power to the
monitor until 5 or 10 seconds AFTER you apply power to the computer, you
won't get this message. Personally, I prefer my monitor lit up BEFORE the
machine begins to boot, in order to observe the POST if needed; so I don't
mind a little "scarey" moment.
