No Shutdown

I have been stalling my XP activation because of a problem
I haven't been able to fix - XP will not complete shutdown
(it hangs on the "XP is shutting down" screen). I have a
P4 w/ an Intel 850GB m/b. My system is convoluted w/ mucho
hardware (USB & SCSI as well as IDE pri/sec) some of which
translate into random access devices so that I am up to
drive N:. Also a LAN & ADSL. All other XP functions work
great! I hesitate to start physically manipulating the
hardware since there are 4 other OS's on this machine
(WinMe, Win2k, & 2 flavors of Linux) which have correctly
enumerated the hardware & which all shut down properly! I
have scanned the Intel/Microsoft FAQ's, but nothing seems
to directly apply to my situation. I can always shut down
by holding in the power button for a few seconds, and when
I again power up (or if I do a hard reset) XP gives no
indication of there having been an improper shutdown. I
may be hearing at least 1 of the 2 hd's spinning down, but
the final shutoff never occurs. I suppose I can live w/
this, but am I missing something obvious re: XP?
