No Server Running - On a Windows Server 2003 Machine

Howdy,

I've purchased Windows Server 2003 and a seperate product, Windows
Server 2003 Web Edition. I've currently got Windows Server 2003 Web
edition installed, which is supposed to be easier to run web pages
from.

I've installed Frontpage 2003, and installed Server extensions.

Frontpage, however, tells me that there's "no server currently running"
and it can't get to the "tools" > "Server" settings. It's greyed out.

How do I fix this? It seems like it's running on a "disk-based" web
mode. How do I make it run like a regular web server?

I'd really appreciate any advice!

Chris

Normally you do not install FP on the server, just the FP extensions from the Windows Server CD when
you install IIS. You then connect to the server from client PC machine via http (IP Address), etc.

Howdy!

Thanks for the quick response....

However, it won't let me connect to the server via a client machine. I
wonder if I should have to re-install the FP extensions.

ok -

I just went to re-install them. I went to configure server extensions,
and told it to extend the FP settings. It said "please wait while the
settings are saved" and it seems to freeze on this screen.

I installed the FP extensions from the Server disk, (as opposed to
downloading them from microsoft's site).

I just tried re-installing the server extensions, and they won't take.
I wonder if that's been the problem all along.

Is there a way I can force them to install? Other than going to control
pannel > Add Remove Programs > windows components > FP extensions ?

Uninstall IIS, reboot, reinstall IIS and the FP extensions from the CD

Howdy!

Thanks again for your help!

I was about to consider formatting the machine and starting over. But
before I did, I wanted to give it one more shot.

See when I set up my webs, in created folders on the server, went into
IIS and pointed to those servers and told it to make it a site.

This time, I went straight into IIS, and chose "New" > "web site" and
allowed IIS to create it.

Now the web-based Admin works, the FP Server Extensions work, and I can
even connect remotely from a client machine through FP.

I stopped the origional sites, and even deleted them.

Everything is up and running. I guess it just needed to create the
sites itself, rather than me creating the folders, and pointing IIS to
them.

Thanks a million!
