Hello, When I upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 Pro
(1) When I boot I get the error message "No SCSI host
adapters found" and (2)perhaps unrelated, my Plexwriter
and Adaptec CD Creator 4 no longer work. What should I do?
Thanks.

Save yourself some time and trouble, given that you'll more than likely end
up with an unstable OS with all the remnants/ corruption left behind from
the upgrade. Best to blow it all away and go for the clean install.

You'll want to boot the Windows 2000 setup disks or CD-Rom. The set of four
install disks can be created from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom; change to the
\bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos) or
makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

Then *F6* very early and very important (at setup is inspecting your system)
in the setup to prevent drive controller detection, and select S to specify
additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to insert the manufacturer
supplied Windows 2000 driver for your scsi controller in drive "A"

If you wait and then S to specify additional drivers, then it may be too
late as Windows 2000 Setup at this point may have already assigned the
resources your drive's controller is wanting to use.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

During Windows 2000 setup, at some point, will want to confirm the previous
operating system for the upgrade; at that point you'll simply insert the
qualified product install CD for it to verify. Then the install will
proceed.

Check the pc, mb or hardware manufacturer's web site for the latest bios and
or Windows 2000 drivers for your devices.

Which adapter is this? If you're using an old/non-Plug 'N Play
adapter (e.g. Adaptec 1505/1515/etc), make sure jumpers on
the card are set to use defaults (IRQ11 and I/O address 140H)
and manually install the card via Add/Remove Hardware.

Thanks, Dave. I appreciate your help and quick reply. I'm
a computer novice but I think I understand. However I have
already installed Windows 2000 Pro so now what? Hattie

Hattie -

Dave has pointed out that an "upgrade" installation of W2k, like yours,
is likely to result in a W2k with persistent subtle problems. Yes,
you've installed W2k - but it may not work correctly...

Rick has pointed out that the SCSI hardware adapter(s) on your machine
are probably not correctly set, or are missing the correct drivers, for
W2k. This is an example of the sort of problem mentioned above.

You'd do well to bite the bullet and follow Dave's and Rick's advice.
Upgrades seem like a shortcut to bliss but often don't work out that way.
