winxp home with all updates and service packs, 400 mb ram, norton av, athelon board.
i have a avi that does not work. when i try to delete it, i get an error message saying"...file in use by another program..." i checked it with norton av, which, like everything else on my machine, is updated at least 3 times a week. norton doesnt detect any viruses. i cant even read the files properties, and there are no details listed in the left hand window. i figured, ill restart in safe mode and delete it that way, but when i do, the arrow keys dont work, so i cant change from "start windows normally" to "start in safe mode". i know its not a keyboard driver issue, cause if the keyboard doesnt work in dos mode, i wouldnt be able to even get to the f8 interface anyway. i had the safe mode issue before i got the bad file im triing to delete, so the 2 are probably not related. please help me figure out how to either delete the file, or fix the safe mode issue so i can delete it that way. Or maybe there is a way to get the system to restart in safe mode without haveing to use f8 that i dont know of.

For deleting undeletable files,
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm
Click "F" for "Files - Remove/Delete", 2/5 down the page. Post back to this
thread if you have difficulty.

For the unresponsive arrow key actions at the Windows XP Advanced Options
Menu screen display, I can offer no solution. Maybe someone else can.

Hi Neal,

[Courtesy of Chris Lanier]

To delete the file in Windows XP, remove the following registry key.

Goto Start >Run >Type "regedit" go to

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850D
C73E}\InProcServer32] - Delete this key

This prevents Windows Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to
the property queries on these files.

Hope this helps.
