No response from a PCI modem?

After months of working well, a friend of mine turned on
the machine one day and suddenly had no modem. He has
tried everything to get it back, but even the new hardware
wizard can't find it. When he installs it manually, and
goes to diagnostics, a Query Modem shows an ATZ going out
to it, but it times out without a response according tothe
log.

Help, please?

Thanks!

Ross

Hard to diagnose remotely. "This device is operating correctly" is what I
get from Device Mangler.

I believe he might have it set for115200, which would make it a _real_ fast
modem........

That setting is normal, the modem won't operate at that speed, but it's ok
to use it.
I'd go into the control panel and delete all references to modem
then try to install again.

If it still does not work, I'd try a different modem.

BTW: I have seen a few Lucent winmodems on win2k just plain quit working
and never work again...yet still functioned ok on a win98 machine.
never did find out why.

I've seen that too ... timing issue maybe ... either way, I simply replaced
the modem ($10 bucks?; $20) and didn't waste too much time trying to
troubleshoot it to see if I could make it work.
