Ok here goes, I had to install Xp on a formatted hard drive now windows does
not seem to recognize my ram. It appears in Dos and every program I use to
scan my computer but Xp only shows me the paging file. I used a program from
the Manufacturer of the hard drive to wipe it and the mbr clean. I have
since tried everything from new drivers to using the ones on the disks that
came with the components. The computer is brand new I built it in April from
brand new components that i purchased if anyone can think of what I am doing
wrong please let me know.

Why did you "have to"? It's rare that anybody has to, and it's usually
a mistake.

now windows does
not seem to recognize my ram.

Exactly what do you mean by "windows does not seem to recognize my
ram"? Where are you looking and exactly what do you see.

It appears in Dos and every program I use to
scan my computer but Xp only shows me the paging file.

If it didn't recognize your RAM, it wouldn't show you the page file
nor anything else. It just wouldn't run.

Please describe exactly what problems you are experiencing.

I had to format my computer's hard drive cause i was trying to learn linux
fedora and it crashed rendering my system useless on startup second im using
task manager to look at the performance tab, the reason i found it wasnt
seeing my ram is because The sims said i had less then 64 mb i have 2 2gb
sticks and i hit ctrl-alt-del clicked performance and found i was only using
a 2gb paging file and no ram i tried to diasable the paging file but windows
opens it again

So this problem occurred while you were running a Linux version?

It sounds, then, like this is a harware problem, not related to any OS.

Again, if the problem is (or was) visible in both Linux and Windows, it
almost certainly has nothing to do with the OS but rather with hardware.

If you want to recheck with a Linux boot, make a Ubuntu CD.
www.ubuntu.org The Desktop CDs are bootable and you will be able to verify
the system behaviour without modification.

Check in the BIOS to see what it says about the system. Power down,
remove and reseat the memory. Remove one stick, swap them around, check
the results in the BIOS. Run a RAM test utility.

I dont have linux on there anymore i used a program to zero out the hard
drive from the manufacturer and decided i wont make it a dual boot system but
ever since it crashed now it locks up all the time i used a memory program
and the ram tests fine i have swapped them but still no change bios says i
have 4.196 gb of ram

That's why I suggested the live Ubuntu CD. It doesn't install anything.
If the problem exibits from Ubuntu, this will tell you if it's OS or
hardware.

This problem *did* start while you were using Linux, correct? That hints
that it isn't an OS problem.
i used a program to zero out the hard

Hence the live CD.

Is it any different with another hard disk?

Also, reset the CMOS. Unplug the system, remove the CMOS batterry, use the
CMOS CLEAR jumper. Be sure that the date goes back, to verify that it's
been cleared.

If you were not using any RAM at all your system would not be working. End
of that discussion.

Where in task manager (for that is what you opened) do you see that you are
using 2Gb paging file and no ram? Don't tell us your conclusions (for, with
respect, they're almost certainly wrong) tell us what you're actually
*seeing*. Are you saying that the "Total" amount under "Physical Memory (K)"
is reading Zero?

As for the lockups, it seems you had those under Linux too - you said that
crashed so bad you had to reformat? Usually when I run two totally different
operating systems on the same bit of hardware and they both keep crashing I
tend to suspect the one thing they have in common with each other, e.g. the
hardware. But that's just me.
