I'm trying to use the recovery console, but usb keyboard and mouse won't
work. Keyboard and mouse are loaded at start up, but stop responding after
xp from cd is loaded. I can not use ps/2 as my Gateway has no ps/2
connections.
Need recovery console to fix invalid boot.ini which is preventing computer
from booting (keeps starting over. Loads bios and then invalid boot.ini and
then starts again.)
No mouse or keyboard with Barts PE. Do have with knoppix.

Thanks

Check to see if USB legacy support is enabled in BIOS. If it is not,
enable it and see if your keyboard and mouse will work then.

The usb mouse and keyboard function until "setup is starting windows" (after
all the drivers etc. are loaded) Setup has loaded generic usb drivers by
then, so I tried plugging the keyboard in after the recovery choice screen is
on. Doesn't recognize keyboard then either.

What is your Gateway model? Maybe there are some hints on the Gateway
World Wide Web page.

Are you trying to boot on a genuine XP installation CD or some Gateway
recovery/system CD that came with your system. They are not the
same. If you are not sure, make a Recovery Console CD and be sure.

You can create a bootable XP Recovery Console CD when no XP media is
available:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic276527.html

If you can get to the drive with Knoppix, rename the suspicious
boot.ini to boot.ini.bak (or something like that) so there is no
boot.in file and then reboot Windows.

In a general purpose single OS configuration, you do not need a
boot.ini for XP to boot. It will complain without one, but still boot
if there is nothing else wrong.

If XP loads up you can take a look at, fix, replace the suspicious
boot.ini - if that is really the problem.

If you are not happy with the result if the rename or things get
worse, use Knoppix to put you original boot.ini back and resume
troubleshooting.

Thanks for all the info.
Yes I have an original XP cd, but in order to start the recovery console it
needs a response from the keyboard, which is usb and doesn't work once
windows setup runs. Tried to activate legacy support, but Bios doesn't have
that option. Haven't found any info at Gateway, even looked for Bios update.
I'm going to install a pci mouse and keyboard controller and hope.
Just wanted you to know I appreciate the effort of a response.

I missed the Gateway model number...

I would like to poke around their stuff too.

Is it still under warranty? I recently worked with somebody else that
had a Gateway they bought a Office Depot and needed a replacement
monitor within the 12 months still. Their technical support is quite
an experience even to get a warranty repair done! Maybe I just had a
bad experience.

ESSENTIAL 933C
It's old, Am trying to fix it for a friend. Son only plays music and
chats, and no money for new or even newer.
