When capturing viseo from video camera, I have no preview moniter and I have
no control of resolution as suggested in the "help" window. I have run three
other different video capture software program including the one that came
with my capture card and the preview works perfect with them, thus
eliminating the hook up as a problem. Any takers on my problem, standing by
for suggestions.

Thanks Wojo for your reply, I'm pretty positive that the hook up is correct
because I can capture my clips from my camera. I just can not see the clip in
the preview window while capturing. I have used three different software
versions and their was no problem viewing the preview while capturing in the
preview window. Also I have no contol of the resolution selection for this
preview window. Both selections are not highlighted. Got anymore suggestions?

By the way I am useing thr AVerMedia video capture card and I am connecting
to the computer via RCA connections. I tried theS video but had no luck at
all.

And there lies the problem with the hookup which was why I asked.
You are using an analog connection with a program that is designed to work
with a digital connection (Firewire preferably but in some cases USB will
work)
When using analog connections many different possibilities can occur and no
preview is only one of them.
The reason it works with the other programs and especially the one that came
with the card is that they are designed to accept the analog signal.
Your hookup options:
1) Stick with your current configuration and capture using the other
software but with this option you are likely to be capturing to MPEG and
will need to convert to AVI to use in Movie Maker.
2) Use some sort of digital pass-through device to hook the analog camera
into such as a digital camera that allows for video pass-through and
connects via firewire or a dazzle80/90 unit which allows for the analog
connection and connects to the computer via USB.

I don't know what kind of camera you have so I can't check to see if it is a
digital camera with a firewire port on it or not. I am assuming not or you
likely wouldn't be using the analog (RCA) cables to begin with and it
probably wouldn't even have an S-Video port.

Thanks Wojo,

The video camera that I am using is a Sony CCD-TRV87 Hi8 analog camera. It
looks like I will have to follow option #2. So a digital camera is the way to
allow this analog signal into MM? Or a dazzle 80/90? Could you explain this
unit to me further. This video capturing is totally new to me. I really
appreciate all of the help that you have given, Thanks.

Well basically the dazzle80 or 90 is a device that input's an analog signal
via RCA cables and outputs through USB. This USB connection will work with
Movie Maker although you will read many posts about USB connections not
working. USB direct from the camera tends to cause problems but a USB
connection through the dazzle unit always seems to work.
Here is a link to the dazzle90: http://tinyurl.com/cuens

So basically are you saying that the Video capture card that I have is of no
use to me and I have to use this Dazzle Unit? Please note that I am able to
record the video clips, so the video is getting through. Only thing is that I
cannot see the preview while I am capturing. Once I have the Captured video I
can see it in the screen on the right no problem.

No I am not saying that really. You can use your capture card with the
software that came with it. I am only saying that Movie Maker rarely ever
works with the analog connection but software that is designed to will work
just fine. You can capture with the software that came with the capture card
and it will probably save the video as an MPEG video clip which you would
then need to convert to AVI to use in Movie Maker. The dazzle80 or 90 is
simply a better route to take and will give you higher quality results.

Thanks a lot for your help Wojo. I will take your advice and try the Dazzle
80 route. I will let you know how everything turns out, Cheers!

Good luck and let us know
