Hi

this is for my friend.
she has had her computer for 3 years now ,running xp 2.0 ghz 512 ram, and
today switched it on and absolutely nothing, except for a "pop" sound ..no
'Beep's no lights ..nothing , power supply problem ?
Any help greatly appreciated

Kind regards

"pop" is generally the sound of a component exploding.
The most likely suspects are:
fuse
capacitor
Only the power supply contains the wattage requisite to explode a fuse.
Capacitors are located both within the power supply and on the motherboard.
You give us little data to trouble-shoot with, but you can't go wrong if you
check the power supply.
Keep in mind that many inexpensive power supplies lack the circuitry to
shield the rest of your system from voltage spikes. Such power supplies very
often fry the motherboard and other internal hardware when they go "pop".

Hi: It is difficult to make an assetment with so little info. It is a laptop
or a desktop? First try to use another plug or power cable. Them check if
there is any light or led that can indicate that some power arrives to the
system. Best option it is to call to the manufacturer or ask for local help.

Un saludo

Does it "pop" every time you switch it on, or just that once? If it was
just once, you should be able to locate by smell and sight as to the
component that failed.

Juan wrote <<First try to use another plug or power cable.>> It is
certainly NOT advisable to try another plug or power cable when, clearly, an
electrical fault has occurred. It is positively dangerous advice. This
situation is best dealt with by someone who knows what they are doing not
wishful thinking!

Hi: Certainly a ""pop" sound " can be interpreted in different ways. No more
references can lead to different interpretations. For sure common sense and
a qualified technicial on site, could take care of the situation as told in
my reply.

One thing is for sure: this has absolutely nothing to do with the OS
and the question is out of place here.

Ask elsewhere.

I would guess power supply first. Get another one to use as a test and
connect it - you don't have to install it - just connect it and see if that
works.

Hello Gibraltar,

Posting such a question in a forum like this means you don't have neither
the knowledge nor the experience, let aside the resources, to deal with a
faulty hardware. Get technical assistance and ignore any suggestion to fix
the hardware.

My 2 cents.

Thankyou to those who tried to help my friend .
as she lives a fair distance from me i an only relay what she has said .
contacting her again she tells me it only popped the once since that one pop
nothing happening at all ..she has a desktop ,pentium 4 .
mr Koppa , this is a forum and i am looking for opinions on what the
possibilities could be .

Heading of this Discussion Group being "Discussion in Windows XP Hardware";
would you kindly, for the benefit of resolution of the case of the initial
post, provide clarification regarding the difference between "Hardware OS"
and "Software OS".

Having seen your kind of responding resolution to another problem elsewhere
- I don't really think it helps a lot.

OK, Mr. Top Poster, how's this:

How does a power supply that is not working properly tie into the OS?
That's what this group is for: discussion the interaction of the OS
with it's hardware. A malfunctioning PS has absolutely NOTHING to do
with the OS, and hence is out of place HERE.

Did you make that up, or do you have a reference from the owner of the
newsgroup?

I looked at the TITLE of the group. It doesn't take a college
education to make the inference. Hell, even a high school graduate
should be able to figure it out. I guess you know where I think you
stand in the education world, right Jethro?
