Well, I downloaded SP2 as advised to do and now have
no pictures in my Outlook express mail. Just little red X
in a white box. I wonder what other surprises are in
store for me after downloading that thing. How do I fix
that please?

Bad advice.

Have you searched groups, such as forums.techguy.org?

You may want to uninstall XP SP2. Use add/remove
programs.

Microsoft is aware of these security issues. In an effort
to strengthen Windows XP, Microsoft released, for
free, "service pack 2".

Unfortunately, the strengthened security will cause some [
1%? , 99%? ] of your programs to malfunction.

Here are some web pages that can provide examples of the
problems you may experience.

Before you install Window XP SP2, contact the tech support
department of every program on your computer. Find out
what recommendations they have for dealing with Windows XP
SP2. Contact the manufacturer of each piece of hardware [
motherboard, video card, modem, network card, etc ], and
ask them what recommendations they have for dealing with
Windows XP SP2.

Wait a while [ 6 months may be reasonable ] until you
upgrade to Windows XP SP2. By Mar 2005, most of the
serious bugs should be discovered and resolved.

Until then: install a firewall; install a popup blocker;
be sure your antivirus software is up to date and
constantly monitoring your system; don't open any
suspicious email; don't visit any questionable [ you will
need to define this term ] web sites.

At google, I searched on: "outlook express" "red x"

Give it a try.
Google treats items within " " as an exact phrase.

Wiley, if you don't know the answer to a simple problem, please don't be
telling people to uninstall SP2. Most post SP2 issues can be resolved
easily.

This is a new privacy feature of Outlook Express to help reduce spam. It
prevents the use of "web bugs" in HTML email that can be used to tell
spammers that your email address is valid, and that emails sent to that
address are being read. This information is of great use to spammers, and if
received they will then proceed to spam the hell out of you.

If you want to send images via email, they should be attached to the
message, and *not* located on an external server and referenced by an <img>
tag. If you receive an email that you *know* to be from a legitimate source
and you wish to see the embedded images, there should be an information bar
at the top of the email display window that will allow you to do so.

This feature can also be turned off permanently, but I would *strongly*
advise you not to do that. The option is on the "Security" tab of the main
Options dialog in Outlook Express if you want to turn it off regardless of
the implications.
