no paging file - Win2k does not load

Win2k does not load but loops between a "Limited Virtual Memory" message and
"Loading your personal settings", getting nowhere. I.e., I cannot get into
Windows to fix the "no paging file" problem.

Is there a way to create the paging file via the Recovery Console?

Is there a way to edit the Registry w/ the Recovery Console to eliminate the
"no paging file" problem?

Anything else I can do with the Recovery Console to fix the problem?

Thanks.

No, same as with normal mode but waaaaaay slower. I.e, it takes much longer
to go through a single loop that leads to nowhere

chkdsk didn't do the trick either ;(

It is surprising how far along in the process it stops and starts looping.
After all, "loading of personal settings" is prettu much at the end of
loading the OS.

I was definitely hoping that one of the many MS, or at least MS related,
people with their vast know how would be able to say what's possible with
the Recovery Console and what is not.

Kind of disappointing that non of them has any suggestions...

chkdsk /r
Whenever I can't boot, that's the first thing I do, now.
It fixes things half the time.

If this allows you to boot, try to get the pagefile to
move, reboot and run chkdsk /r again. If you have more
than one partition/drive, move to the other partition. If
you can't get it to move, try reducing the pagefile to
something minimal like 32MB, then run chkdsk /r, then put
the pagefile back to a proper size.

Just saying that even under the best of circumstances, there's no SLA in
newsgroups, and a lot of people are very busy volunteering to help victims
of the new worm at the moment.
Does that mean that I can hope for some suggestions once the worm
craze tunes down?
Gee, almost sounds like a chapter from Dune...

Thanks Bjorn for the link but I am not sure whether that article applies to
my case. E.g., I did not add a HD/partition so I cannot remove anything. I
don't know how to connect from another network computer to the one
experiencing the problem if it does not have a working OS. Procedure 4 is
rather complicated but not fully explained so I rather keep my hands off
that one. And the last suggestion, creating a new MBR contains some
signifcant risks. I'll have to make copies of all the partitions first
because FIXMBR detected a "faulty or non-standard partition table". And then
I am not even sure that this would solve my problem. FIXBOOT did not resolve
it.

Bjorn,

unfortunately FDISK /MBR did fix the problem. Still the same behavior:
almost at the end of loading personal settings looping occurs.

And the blackout did not make a difference either ;(

You can safely ignore the message FIXMBR gives, see this MS Knowledge Base
article:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=266745

However, FIXMBR will not fix the problem. FDISK /MBR from DOS/Win9x might
be able to do it. The difference is that FDISK /MBR deletes the disk
signature in MBR, but FIXMBR doesn't.

Did you get the same drive letters as before?

If your problem wasn't related to changed drive letters, then I have no
idea of what caused it.
