I am running Windows XP SP2 media center edition (legal version),
IEv.6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519.

Recently I updated ie6 to ie7 beta2. From then on IE does not load any page.
It simply shows blank page with 'done' at the bottom. But it partially loads
secure web pages. I tried to uninstall IE7 and rolled back to IE6, but the
problem persists. I've been
working on this for a while now, and have tried the following:

1. Clearing the temporary internet files, cache, and history.

2. Resetting all IE options with internet options to default.

3. Reregistering IE files with IERegFix.

4. Running sfc /scannow.

5. Trying to reinstall IE through ie.inf.
PROBLEM HERE is that as I have Windows XP media center edition (genuine), it
does not come with XP CD. Instead it has recovery filed on D: partition
(which is not allowed to view). CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHERE MY SETUP FILE OF IE6
IS LOCATED IN IT? Or any other solution for re-installing?

6. Installing and uninstalling IE7 (i.e. IE6 to IE7 and back to IE6)
7. Downloading the ie6setup file.
It said that "setup has detected a newer version of internet
explorer". I tried to make the registry entry as 0, but it still shows the
same message. AGAIN, CAN YOU TELL ME THE REASON?
8. I have tried to register dll files by commands like "regsvr32 urlmon.dll"
(and all other dlls mentioned on the forum).

Any help would greatly be appreciated. I'm using firefox right now, but I
definitely want IE back and soon, since my broadband usage can be viewed
only in IE.

I have the same problem as Urvang, and have also tried the same things.
My problems with IE started in the middle of yesterday eve, BEFORE I
tried IE7.....

Some things to add are that MSN Messenger 7.5 won't connect
either......

Also, rolling back from IE7 and reinstalling IE6 using ie.inf worked,
albeit temporarily,... Now my IE is back to it's non working state!

Hi,
Does the problem still occur if you disable all add-ons from IE> Tools>
Manage add-ons?

How about if you startup in Safe Mode with Networking?
315222 - A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=315222
If IE can load pages in Safe Mode you need to find the third-party program
that isn't running in Safe Mode, but is causing the problem when it is
running.

Hope this helps,
Don

Hi Don,
Firstly thanx for the quick reply, but ,sorry to say, these didn't work.
(1) I tried to disable all add-ons and restarted IE, but no joy.
(2) Then I booted XP in safe mode with networking, still the same problem.
(3) To add, I have also removed all spyware and adware from my PC through
'HijackThis', 'spybot S&D' and 'windows malicious software removal
tool'(which was formerly 'windows antispyware')

One thing I forgot to mention in previous mail was that, although 'done'
appears at the bottom, mouse cursor shows that IE is busy. Also, as IE7 has
tabs, tab header shows 'loading'

please, whoever has any idea, keep posting ideas and replies...

I too have MCE and I've run into a similar problem after installing a
bunch of Windows Updates a couple days ago.

One of the updates was a patch that fixed a problem with IE7 (KB
904942), but I don't have IE7 installed. I can't uninstall it because
it does not show up in the list of installed software.
I tried a System Restore but that did not work, so I undid the restore.

It's not a problem with my ISP because I have another unpatched
computer that can access these sites ok.

One site in particular - my ATT Webmail page - changed it's User
Interface a few months ago. I can no longer access the new site, but I
can access the old one. Before the system restore, it would display
part of the page, but placing the mouse over scrollbars and other
stuff, would pop up an alert box saying something like "Scrollbar
object doesn't exist", which leads me to believe it's a javascript
and/or permissions problem. After I did/undid the System Restore the
page is completely blank.

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

3. Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded.

4. If that doesn't fix it, see this article:

http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers/26.html

5. If you are using WinXP try this:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/reg/IE_Default_Browser.reg

6. See Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1 may display a blank Web page
after you select Auto-Select encoding
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870863

You can also try this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC (msconfig for WinXP).
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk' ("Expand File" for WinXP).
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which is
probably in the Win98 (i386 for WinXP) folder of your installation CD-ROM
(typically D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs (Windows\i386 for
WinXP) folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System (C:\Windows\System32
for WinXP), and click OK. System File Checker (or msconfig) looks for the
file, saves it as you requested, and then tells you that 'the file has been
successfully extracted'.

You may need to reboot.

Hi Frank,
I've already mentioned that I HAVE ALREADY TRIES ALL OF THESE.

However, there are TWO QUERIES I have:

1. You have sent me the following link:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/reg/IE_Default_Browser.reg
Please tell me how do I use this file.

2. Another problem is that, as I'm using WinXP MCE and it doesn't come with
installation disk, I don't know where they are. I only have a rescue
partition, where critical system files are stored, but I don't have access to
it. SO SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME TO FIND OUT THE INSTALLATION FILE.

1. Save IE_Default_Browser.reg to your hard drive, right click it, and
choose merge.

2. Did you search yout hard drive for the i386 folder that I mentioned?

Hi Frank,
I tried merging .reg file and rebooted, but it was of no help.
Then I searched for I386 folder, and as u said it was in my hard drive at
c:\windows\i386 location. But this location doesn't contain iexplore.exe or
ie6setup.exe...

So, is the name of setup file something else? I browsed through all files
starting from 'i'...Or is it other than an application file? I saw a file
iexplore.ex_ ; is that of any use?

Hi,
Once again thank you for your quick responses.

I have a query here:

When I use msconfig as per your instructions, and in 'Restore from', when I
browse to 'C:\windows\I386', I need to select a cab file. The cab files are
as follows:
DRIVER.CAB, FP40EXT.CAB, IIS6.CAB, IMS.CAB, MANAGER.CAB, MSSETUP.CAB,
MODEM.CAB, OSC.CAB, SP2.CAB, WIN.CAB, WINSYS32.CAB, WINSYS.CAB

Which one I should select? I tried one or two (like WINSYS32.CAB), but after
clicking on 'Expand File', I received no confirmation message.

:

I have no CAB files in i386. I just point to i386 and it expands
oleaut32.dl_ to oleaut32.dll
