after clearing the internet temp files and using disk
clean up and defragging the computer. the computer os will
not come up.

Hi Beth,

Would I be right in thinking that it was also your post
regarding the problem with those screens, which you now
think is an OS problem?

Just wondering whether you are getting anything at all on
the screen, e.g. any error messages, blinking cursors, etc?

Have you tried booting up in safe mode & doing a "system
restore?"

S.

Yes, that's me.
The pc is now rebooting and hanging on the HP invent
screen. find out what program is hanging up the reboot
process.
any thoughts?

Hi Beth,

Glad to hear that you have made some progress :-)

What have you done to reach that stage?

If you achieved that through "safe mode" & "system
restore," may be you could try restoring to an even
earlier time if possible.

You could also try the other options available when
starting in safe mode, such as "last known good
configuration" & see if any of those work for you.

You'll be unimpressed to hear that I'm no expert, but I'm
wondering whether anything important got deleted or
corrupted whilst running your maintenance processes, in
which case you may be faced with a Windows Repair job at
some stage, but I hope not!

If you can get to your desktop by one means or another,
you could also try running the "msconfig" utility &
disabling all those startup items & see if that helps.

Bit of a coincidence, not to say "bummer," having it occur
on two machines!

Thanks for the encouragement and support!
The computer is back up and running at this point. I am
offsite from the computer. the user was able to continue
rebooting until the pc was able to come completely up.
Will review your message with her and see what the best
solution is going to be.
Thanks again. will let you know what happens.

Beth, I have some ideas you might try:
Can you get into the BIOS?(tap F1 after restart)
If so, use arrow keys to get to Boot, and down arrow keys
to select Boot Device Priority. Hit <Enter>. select CD-
ROM and use the +/- key to make it third on the list and
hit <F10> to save, and "Yes". (The actual menu may be a
little different in your HP's BIOS, but you need to make
sure the Hard Drive has priority as the boot device. If
this is off, check all your other BIOS settings. Get
familiar with what they are and maybe try "restore to
default".

I will try to see if that helps.
