My previous version of WMM worked great with the mpgs I captured but now
with XP SP2 qnd the new movie maker - something has changed. Either I have
done something wrong on two separate computers or there is a known problem
with the new WMM - maybe the mpg codecs I used are no longer legal to import
and they only import as audio files or SP2 has zapped some upper or lower
filter settings???

I have read the codec reference everyone points to here - which says your
mpgs may play on realplayer just fine but do not import into WMM or work on
WMM - I have nothing excluded in terms of codecs and as far as I know
nothing manually changed on my two systems nor intended to be changed or
removed on my system. I did note that realplayer 9 and 10 are almost FORCED
on the user with the SP2 changes.

I use GigaPocket to capture my analog video (SVHS) and then used to import
it into WMM with no problems.

Are you referring to Windows Media Player or Real Player.... I do not have
and will not have any version of Real Player on my desktop.

I can confirm that this a problem. I too used to be able to import MPG files
created with Nero 9 (from my hardware capture card), but since I installed XP
SP2 and Movie Maker 2.1, I now get the error message

"The file xxxx.mpg cannot be imported because the codec required to play the
file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download
and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to
import the file again."

Yet Windows Media Player 10 can quite happily play these same MPG files
(apparently without first downloading the codecs -- they are already here!).

Does anyone know of a workaround?

I'm frankly surprised at the SILENCE in this room about this. I know for a
fact that my GigaPocket MPEG-2 captures imported JUST fine in moviemaker
before I started this XP SP2 changeover. I have restored back to the day
BEFOE SP2 was applied but my movie maker remains broken with these MPG
files.

My workaround was to buy X Video Converter and change the MPG (MPEG-2) files
to WMV
I have a feeling there was some silent legal agreement between the parties
that the proprietary codes were to be "crippled" in some fashion when these
new application hit the street.

Once I purchased the Advanced X Video Converter, I am able to at least
convert my MPG files to WMV when we learn hoe to use a computer

MPEG support in Movie Maker is completely dependant upon 3rd party codecs --
Microsoft doesn't currently have a license to ship the codec.

There are a multitude of tools available to help you manage the codec's you
have installed. Papajohn and others have posted links to them in the past,
and can recommend a tool appropriate for your needs. If you have multiple
MPEG codec's installed, you may be able to workaround the issue by tinkering
with order they are picked up by DShow (usually, this means renaming them,
or unregistering them.) The Compatibility tab in MM2.1 may offer you some
insight as to which MPEG codec is being used as well.

I'm sorry I don't have a better answer here...
Maybe some can post up their experiences with MPEG2 content on MM2.1, and
let you know which codec they are using.

BUT - I had NO problems with moviemaker prior to Sep 6 when I started
mucking with SP2 and the NEW Moviemaker.

i have been trying to figure out what went wrong and i now that it must be
mm2.i used to copy dvd with power producer and this saved as a media file
which i could play on m/player, thus i was able to import it into mm1, and
then i could import it to studio 8, it seems those days are gone but thanks
for stopping me thinking i must have been mistaken about the compatability.i
have read that you can use xvideo converter to change them to avi and then
mm2 will accept them so for any one who wants every tool you will need, get a
copy of PC TOOLS ISSUE 18 which has 2 cover discs of freeware including
xvideo converter and lots of other really good video stuff.

do you know if it is possible to refomat a second pc with sp1 and copy mm1,
and then uninstall mm2 on my other pc and reinstall mm1 or would auto update
just undo the change

thanks, do i have to do that in the way i have described or is there a
better way and if i do do you think it will open mpeg again

The executable file for MM1 is less than a Meg in size and fits on a floppy
disc.... you just need to find a copy of it.... rename it before putting it
into the folder so it doesn't conflict with the MM2 file (I renamed mine to
MovieMk1.exe) and then make an icon on your desktop pointing to it.

I'd expect it work as it did before.

I tried the converter and still have no results.
My video file shows DVD MPG file. The type of archive is identified as MPEG,
but neither the download of the MPEG2 codec nor the failed trials of format
conversions with the X converter got me any further
