No notifications from SP2 firewall

I have the SP2 firewall turned on and it is clearly doing its job. Actually
more than expected. I am not receiving notification messages.
What might cause this? I have the notification button turned on. If I try
to attach to a share on the mechine, it does not allow me in, but I see no
message. If I try to attach to a VPN concentrator using TCP, it does not
attach, still no notification.
The is on a machine that is a member of a domain, with the firewall manually
configured on this machine by a user with administrative rights. Once the
details are worked out, the intention is to put them into a group policy to
apply to all laptop machines which can be removed from the local network.

Windows Firewall only notifies if an application has requested to listen for
unsolicited inbound traffic. It does not currently have any feature to track
unsolicited requests that it blocks outside of the dropped packet log.

I'm not clear as to what you're trying to ultimately accomplish for your
laptops.

What I am trying to do first, is to use one machine to experiment with SP2
and the firewall to verify that it can be controlled to properly protect our
workstations. Once I can determine that everything works as expected, I
intend to configure the machines using group policy. From what you stated,
I understand why I am not seeing notifications. The next question is, why
does it not work? I will start a new thread for that.

Thanks,
David
