No notification of available updates

A while back Vista rebooted, without asking permission, to install
updates. To prevent a recurrence I set Windows Update to "check for
updates but let me choose..." Since then, it has never notified me
when updates were available. I occasionally open the update app to see
if there are any updates, and it apparently checks every day, but never
tells me when it finds something. The Windows Update service is set to
manual and is started. Security Center is also running.

Is something else needed for it to actually notify me? It would be
nice if I didn't have to keep checking.

Windows Updates are normally released on the 2nd Tuesday of the month(unless
a total emergency!).

When did you change the Updates settings?

I set mine to notify, as well. I like to be in control, and take
responsibility when these things happen.

When an update is available, a little icon appears in my task bar. It is
easily overlooked.
If you "mouse over" it, a bubble appears, telling you that updates are
available.
If you can't see your taskbar, you likely won't see anything.

I've never noticed anything odd in the taskbar, but I suppose it's
possible I missed it. Presumably it's in the system tray. Would
hiding inactive system tray icons hide that one? Surely not! I'll
start looking for a hidden icon, just in case.

A couple months ago. There have been at least two sets of updates
since then, but no notification.
