I got a new Laptop with XP and set up a home network with my
desktop(win98se). Setting up network(Ethernet) seemed to go fine with the
wizard. Made a floppy and used Netsetup on the desktop. Went fine.

From the desktop I can now see and access files on the laptop but on the
laptop I do not get My Network Places on the Start Menu and can't see the
desktop files. Can't find anything in Help.

Realise there is probably a group for networking problems but this seems so
elementary, thought I'd ask here since I'm new to XP.

Did you run the floppy on the laptop?

Thanks for your detailed and helpful reply. Followed your
instructions, which worked of course and I got My Network Places on the start
menu. Went there but nothing in it but the standard three icons. No sign
of my network.
Ran the New Network Wizard again; seemed to run fine but afterwards no sign
of any network. Thought perhaps I had to run the floppy on the desktop
again. looked first at Network Connections on the Desktop. No longer any
sign of the laptop or its files.
Started to run the floppy again. At an early stage it asks you to remove
the floppy and reboot. WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT. The desktop refuses to eject
the floppy! Never experienced anything like this in my life. Neither
switching on and off nor - very gently - poking around can make it come
out. We're getting a long way from the query or the subject of the group
but have you any idea of what's gone wrong.

Me again. Problem.solved. After the desktop refused to boot two or three
times -"Non-system Disk" - suddenly at the fourth attempt, it booted and
immediately ran Netsetup. I now have a working network. The contents of
the floppy showed up on Explorer and after pushing on the button and
simultaneously pushing the disk gently further in with an eraser, it popped
out.

Problems solved. The network is reporting about 12 printers attached to the
desktop but I'll work that out later.

Thanks for your help in solving the initial problem - No My Network Places.

Stuart;
You're welcome. Good deal.

"The network is reporting about 12 printers attached....."
:o)
It just shows to go ya, "There's always something."
