Dell Dimension 5150
WinXP Professional
Dell USB keyboard & mouse

I replaced a bad DVD drive for a friend's system.
System boots just fine and sees new DVD and starts "new hardware".

Issue:

Neither the mouse nor keyboard work.

In POST boot, I can F2 and have full keyboard function.
I used another USB keyboard & mouse, same, F2 works but not in Windows.

I booted into Norton Ghost 14 recovery CD and guess what, the mouse &
keyboard work.

How do I get the USB keyboard & mouse to function in a normal boot?

Do you mean that you can't get to the Windows boot menu? Or once you are in
Windows, neither the mouse nor keyboard work? Did they all work before the
new DVD was installed? If you unplug it, do the mouse and keyboard start
working again?

I can both F2 to the Dell setup and F8 to the windows recovery screen. At
both cases, the keyboard works (mouse is not an option there). When I go
through the windows normal and safe mode startup, neither the keyboard nor
mouse work. I have tried unplug and different USB connections as well as
another keyboard & USB mouse; at the windows desktop screen, neither the
keyboard nor mouse operate.

I asked my friend if the keyboard/mouse worked before. He said yes but I am
not sure it did. This machine was not in use for a while because he could
not get the cd to work to load his software.

Press F1, Esc, or Delete key, whichever gets you to the BIOS Setup
screen. Look for USB Legacy Support, or a similar option and make sure
it's turned on. If that doesn't help, borrow a PCI kb and mouse and them.

PS2 mouse and keyboard, of course.. "and try them as a test.".

Better still start using wireless mouse and keyboard. Dell systems seems to
have serious problems with USB hosted devices.

Did the system KB and moose work okay before you replaced the DVD
drive? You don't need a DVD drive for the KB and mouse to work - if
that is what changed, remove it.

Does the system behave differently if the new DVD drive is removed
from the configuration?
