Hi,

I had to replace the crashed HD on my Dell Inspiron 8200.
No technical problem there. Then I reinstalled WinXP (with SP1) from the
original CD that came with the laptop. Then (after setting up the
network and accounts) I installed SP2 and all Win patches, all
applications, and got the documents back from the backup.

Well, since this reinstall I have no more trackpad & mini-joystick, and
the built-in sound is absent (even with a headphone).

I do not see any problem listed in the system diagnostics (list of
drivers). when I insert the drivers&utilities disk (also came with the
laptop) it says that all needed drivers are already loaded.

What is missing ???

Update :
- Actually there is sound with the headphones, but never with the
built-in speakers
- I (re)installed the sound driver and the ALPS touchpad driver from the
Dell support site. No improvement...

If you got an install CD of the XP that was installed on your laptop,
you will need to located the correct drivers your your model of
laptop. The most important driver for most new XP installs is the
motherboard chipset drivers. These drivers tend to get the "required"
controls to access the components on the main board (motherboard) so
XP can then access the remaining hardware correctly.

Thanks for this advice. I will try to find the correct driver on the
original CD. I already found the ALPS touchpad & stick driver on the web.

BTW, another setting that was changed is that the windows startup screen
(before obtaining the login dialog box) is very small, occupying only
half the screen width instead of being full screen.
Maybe because it expects a screen resolution much below the actual one.

Any idea where I could change this behaviour ?

TouchPad Won't Work

I'm having the same problem. I have installed the latest ALPS driver from Dell, and still the touchpad won't work at all.

I have installed windows xp from the same disc I have always used previously on this same computer with no problems before. Don't know why it won't work now???

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Luke
