No Longer Needed Images

It seems that when I finish a FP 2002 Web I always have anywhere from a few
to lots of images left over that are no longer needed. I assume these add
weight to my page and I would like to delete them. My problem is I have a
lot of trouble identifying the needed from the unneeded ones.

Does anyone else have this problem? If so, please tell me the best/easiest
way to identify the no longer needed ones so I can safely delete them.

Normally when I replace images I either name then same or delete them
immediately.

However the best approach I have found when working on a web project, is to
copy the images from the web to a folder on my desktop via My Computer, then
in FP delete all images, then run a broken hyperlink report, and then import
the missing images back into the web.

Click on the Reports icon on the left hand side of FP (assuming you have the
Views Bar active), and choose Unlinked FIles. This will show you a list of all
the graphics that aren't used in the current web.

HTH,
Craig

Thanks Craig. I followed your instructions but saw at least two graphics
that I know are currently in that Web and shouldn't be deleted. I also saw
three pages that I just hadn't linked yet and a Javascript file that needs
to remain. Being pretty new to FP this is scary stuff. Isn't there an easier
more sure-fire way to delete only unneeded images?

Tom, sorry but I am confused by your reply. Call me naive, but I though FP
would have a more direct approach for what must be a common problem.

No, it can really only manage files that are being used within the web.

That is why I make it a habit to delete files as soon as I know that I will
not be using them, especially images.

The reports will only show image in your pages (not in scripts or nav bars, mouseovers, etc)
You could try View Hyperlinks (and select each image in Folder List) to see which ones show no links, but you will still have to
check if they are used in any scripts on your pages
When unsure, rename or move the image & see if FP tells you it is resetting hyperlinks

He means, copy ALL the images from your web into a folder someplace (for a
back-up), then delete whatever you want from your web, or delete them all.

Now you can put back what's missing. (Determine this visually or by doing a
broken hyperlink report in FP.)

Bill -

I'm certainly not a veteran compared to many others here, so I suppose it's
POSSIBLE that FP could make a mistake about which files are unlinked and which
are not, but that's such a straightforward computer matter it seems unlikely. If
yours is not a huge site you might check the unlinked list against the linked
list. Maybe you have similarly named graphics?

And yes, it will also list CSS and script files, but you can just ignore them
and look at the GIF and JPG entries. Naturally, it will show you picture files
you *know* you haven't linked yet.

As an intermediate step you could create a new folder called, say, Unused, move
whatever images you think are unused into that folder, then go reports again and
check to see if there are any new broken links. If so, you've moved an image
that shouldn't be deleted. Simply move it back to the images folder.

HTH,
Craig

However the method of moving the images in the current open web to another
will cause FP to update the paths in all files using the each images, still
leaving you at the same point of not have a way to determine which images
are not being used.
