No longer getting a "preview" of JPG images when viewing a Folder

I have not been to these newsgroup/forum entries for years... Since Win 2000
Beta. Sorry, if I post this in the incorrect spot.

Anyway - I have recently (yes, I still use Win 2000 Pro) had a couple of
problems resulting from my installing latest Windows Update fixes. of two
weeks ago I am not surprised with that -- I know how support of older
systems can be a complicated matter -- and, in turn, I have resolved (with
Microsoft's help) both of the key problems -- but, not this one:

I no longer get a "preview" of a JPG when I single-click on the item when on
folder-view. I can go through View->Customize folder and end up with a
"fancy" preview (I had never tried that, before....) but when doing so, the
Tools->Folder Options does not adhere to the feature and, as a result, I need
to customize each and every folder.

I work a lot with JPGs, so I am hoping that I simply have messed something
up on this one machine. My laptop and second PC are OK so far.... but, I
susepct that someday whatever update modified something will navigate to
those systems as well.

Sorry, for the length of this entry.

Try "Tools | Folder Options | General | Enable Web Content in Folders".

I believe that setting applies to every folder. If not, go to "Tools |
Folder Options | View" and turn OFF "Remember each folder's view settings".

I wrote a response to this -- but, it was tossed by the submit routine.

So, I summarize: NO, the problem still exists.

All I want is the "simple" preview for the JPGs when I click on them (the
preview for "htm" files is fine, for example).

I can customize each folder as I go along to get the fancy preview (by
taking the path of: View->Customize Folder -- but, I have to do that each and
every folder.

I guess that I will do that.... eventually I will have all commonly-used
folders set up.

Don't waste time on it. Something happened to this system as a result of
the Windows Updates two weeks ago.

We move on.....

Thanks again and

Menu Start -> Run -> regsvr32 shimgvw.dll

Thanks for the hint. No luck. The command seems to work fin (I get a
confirmation that the registration worked).

You probably are on the correct path. After the original problem appeared
(following the Windows Update of a couple of weeks ago), Microsoft assisted
me in a path that resulted in using regsvr32 and associated commands -- and,
after that: Windows Update and another application that I need worked/remain
working. Good... No "normal" home computer user would have went through the
commands that were recommended to me by Microsoft -- so, I am quite sure all
of this is unique to this one system..... I hope.

As far as this last-problem-to-solve (I say that, hopefully.... and, I also
believe in Santa) I am just going along with each folder and using the
Customize path to get the "fancy preview" it affords -- and, not worrying
about the "simple" preview no longer working.

Strange, though, and I amwilling to keep trying (other than re-install
Windows 2000 Pro!) if someone has a good idea.

Use regedit to check and correct the following registry keys:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\PersistentHandler
default={098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpeg\PersistentHandler
default={098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bmp\PersistentHandler
default={098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}

Thanks for the comeback.

I think you are "on the track". How this happened.... well, for now, I
don't care. I am quite sure it happened the weekend of the Microsoft Updates
(as I mentioned earlier) -- but, I am now wondering why registry keys would
have been messed up by Microsoft Updates. Strange... so, I am now wondering
if the Microsoft Updates messed up Corel PaintShop Pro (whom I have as my
default handler for jpg, etc.).

After the above-mentioned update I was not able to get Corel PaintShop Pro
version XI active -- so, I backed off of that version and used PaintShop Pro
version 9. I used PaintShop Pro Version 9 until Microsoft Updates was
straightened out (the Microsoft tech person sent me a suggested routine that
ended up working as far as I know). After Microsoft Updates was OK,
PaintShop Pro was able to be initialized OK -- and, in fact, I was sent an
update from Corell for version XI and after re-installing XI and putting that
update on: PaintShop Pro Version XI is very solid (previously, XI had been a
little shakey). Why am I mentioning this? Well, I want to have everything
on the table if you consider remaining with this "Preview" problem!

In any case, regedit shows that "PersistentHandler" is not there for jpg, etc.

"Find" shows PersistentHandler there for some entries (such as "tiff") but
not for jpg, etc. I made a tiff to see if the preview would come up, but it
did not. I did not modify any keys in the registry.

Again: I am not at a dead-end! I am able to use the folder's
View->Customize one folder at a time.... no problem.... just, strange!

Ignore all this -- or, any other ideas: I give it a try.

I am not sure how to add the PersistentHandler to the registery.... but,
would try to do so if you think I should.

Thanks, again, and

Dave Shogren
