Hi,
I have a home network consisting of the following:
Desktop Machine
Windows XP SP2
Shared printer on desktop machine
Member of a workgroup only
Laptop Machine
Windows 2000 Professional
From work
At work, I login to an Active Directory domain
Hub/Router
Connects the two machines
When I bring my laptop machine home, I can network in ONE WAY ONLY, from the
desktop to the laptop, i.e. from WXP to W2K. What I do is:
Invoke Windows Explorer on the desktop
In the address field, enter the IP@ of the laptop, i.e. \\192.168.1.3
I get prompted with an authentication dialog from the laptop
I login with my cached DC credentials, i.e. DOMAIN\username & pw
I can then see the files on the laptop from the desktop.
When I try the exact opposite, attempting to network FROM the laptop (W2K)
TO the desktop (WXP), I get this error dialogue:
There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request.
Since my laptop can't see my desktop, I can't use the shared printer on the
desktop, nor can I initiate any file transfer from the laptop (either push
or pull).
What do I need to configure in WXP on the desktop so that I can establish
networking from W2K to WXP? AFAIK, I've just got the default settings on
both the laptop and the desktop.
Thanks,
Scott
