No LAN connection after SP2

I installed SP2 on a Notebook with XP Professional (4 weeks old, running smoothly). After SP2 there was no way to open the internet connection through a LAN. The computer says it cannot assign a IP number. Since I thought there might be a problem with the firewall settings, I tried to change them, but this doesn't work. After this everything froze and I had to manually restart my computer.

Trying many other things for 2 hours, I haven't solved the problem and had to de-install SP2.

Any known solution???

Thanks,
