My WindowsXP HE machine was stricken with a virus. I'm in the process of
mining data from it so I can flatten and rebuild it. I was able to enter and
gather data on a couple of occasions but on the last attempt I needed to use
the keyboard to search for files. I wasn't able to enter any charaters in
the Find Files secton from the Start button. Can somone give me a clue on
how I can get the keyboard back please?

So does that mean your keyboard would not insert characters when the
insert point or focus was in the input textbox of the Find dialog, or
that your keyboard doesn't work at all when booting into Safe Mode (as
your Subject implies)? If the latter case is what you meant to ask
about, and if your keyboard is connected to a USB port, have you tried
connecting the keyboard to the PS/2 port and rebooting?

The keyboard is lit. It simply won't permit me to >>... enter any charaters
in the Find Files secton from the Start button<<.

And your point? It will be lit whether you connect it to the PS/2 or
USB port. I am assuming that you are asking about a desktop computer.
Maybe you are asking about a laptop. You never identified what type of
host you are using.

Does the keyboard work in any other application? Does it work when you
open Notepad to start writing a document?

Same thing happen if you open Explorer, right-click on a folder, and
select Search from the context menu?

Are you using the fluffy Fisher-Price step-by-step interface to Search
or are you using the classic interface? I dumped the Fisher-Price
interface the same day I installed Windows XP.
