I have 2 computers, XP Home and Win98SE. Both are connected to a router
with cable broadband access. Both computers can see each other but the XP
computer cannot access the internet. The Win98SE computer can connect to
the internet. The XP computer has been recently upgraded from WinMe. The
connection worked fine before the upgrade.

Any suggestions to get the XP computer connected?

Thanks

Larry,

Sounds like the in-built firewall is on! Check >settings>network adaptor
properties>advanced - check the Internet Connection Firewall check box. If
this is checked, that will be the reason.

Larry,
Sounds like the in-built firewall may be on and perhaps blocking?

Check >settings>network adaptor

To eliminate any windowsXP oddities, can you ping your ISP from the upgraded
box?

Another possibility is whether the gateway and DNS servers are still defined
on the Me system after the upgrade?

If both systems can see each other they can obviously see each other, so it
would have to be gateway/Internet related in respect of the XP box.

Firewall box is unchecked.

XP can not ping. 98SE pings XP with no problem.

Both XP and 98 has the same gateway and DNS servers settings.

I will have to check the router's docs once again.

Okay, so for some reason the 98SE box is not receiving the ping request from
the XP system.
Can you veirfy the IP is the defintely the correct one on the 98SE box by
running "ipconfig /all" from the command prompt?

I know I have asked about the built in firewall, but I trust you are not
runnin any other firewall within the network that is blocking access to the
LAN?

.
I had the same problem when I networked my 2 pc's 1st
the built in firewall must be disabled in XP and 2nd XP
should be the host pc ( XP is connected to internet and
shares the connection with win98 )

XP can not ping anything. I get an error code 65.

It is correct.

Neither computer has a firewall.

Hmmmm..okay and no ICS running either given that they both access the net
via a router?

Problem soolved. Somehow XP re-installed ZoneAlarm, (I thought I removed
all traces of it before the upgrade) and ZA was blocking access. XP
uninstalled ZA and now we have a connection.

Thanks for your help.

Larry,

Another check, you say it cannot ping anything, but what about the router?
It must be able to ping that as you have net access from both?

Glad to hear it is working.
