No internet through router

A friend of mine has cable modem access to the internet.
If you connect the cable modem directly to the computer it
works fine. When you connect the modem to the Linksys
router, and connect the system to the router it does not
go to the internet. I connected to the router with my
Win98 laptop and went surfing no problems.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I assume your win98 laptop is set up for the network
(DHCP server) to supply an IP address for it ...and the
router is setup to do that.

The workstation likely was set up with a static IP
address (manually entered); and that IP address is not in
the same IP subnet that the router is using. Set the
workstation IP setting to "system provides me one", and
then try it.

Both the XP system and the router are set
to "automatically obtain IP address" My laptop is setup
the same way.

I did not try pinging the DNS server, but when connected
to the router I am able to access the firmware
configuration utility by entering the IP address in the
browser.
