I have a small home network running windows 2000 server with a client using
XP Pro. I have a Linksys router dealing with DHCP allocation and connect to
the internet through a DLink ADSL Modem.

Today, I have found that although I can ping all relevant hardware mentioned
above and also my ISP (who confirm that I am logged on), I cannot access
email externally or use the internet.

The only thing I did with the server yesterday was install remote/routing in
preparation for establishing a VPN, which I have still to do. I have
subsequently disabled it.

Does this sound like it could be the problem or is it some sort of DNS
thing, or is it something else entirely.

Incidentally, I have used ipconfig... release/renew/flushDNS and
registerDNS to try and sort things out with no success.....

Any help appreciated...

I've tried most of these things without success. I've also restored a ghost
image of my server, also without success. I've reset the router again to no
effect. Currently I am using an old modem on my XP PC to access the
internet.

I have spent all day trying to sort this out and have now not even got a
working network......

I tried nslookup but all it could come up with was that it couldn't find a
server name for the DNS server IP address. What this means or what I can do
about it is anybody's guess..

Help....

if you try resolving any symbolic address using nslookup
it doesn't work, right?
Can you open a webpage using the numeric?
(use 216.109.125.79) for www.yahoo.com

I think I have eliminated the router and the win2000 machine. I installed
the adsl modem direct into the XP machine and it still doesn't work after
changing the settings.

I think it could be the DNS server somewhere. I get an IP address for the
dns server of 81.27.64.22 which I can't ping whether through this old modem
I've reverted to or the ADSL one I normally use.

Using this old modem I get the former DNS IP along with one of 4.2.2.1 which
I can. Does anybody know what the 81.etc IP address is all about?

Still confused...

No, I can't. I've since taken the ADSL Modem to another PC at another
address and it works fine there.

Not a one outside of my small home network, EXCEPT the IP address of my
ISP...

Using somebody else's modem I can connect to my ISP as normal and as I
mentioned, the Dlink modem that wont work here works on somebody else's
PC...
