I'm using XP Home with DSL. My provider tells me the line
is fine. IE looks like it tries to come up, but to no
avail. I downloaded and ran the beta product, but get the
same results. PC otherwise seems to be just fine. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Bill, but I'm not getting any error messages. Just
a non-responsive browser. Does this page still apply to
me? Thanks

Ha, Sounds more like spyware. Restart in safe mode, on the scan page choose
scan options, full system scan.

I can't tell--if you don't have network connectivity, and are on XP SP2, for
most users, this has no side effects--very simple (command line, netsh
winsock reset <enter> and reboot.)

It's the first thing I'd try--beyond this there are also TCP/IP resets, and
processes to reinstall the browser, but this article covers the vast
majority of folks who clean spyware, and then post with your subject header.

We're hoping that Microsoft will figure out how to do this better in a
future version of this product, but for the moment, that KB article is the
way to go. If you happen not to be on Service pack 2 yet, there's a
third-party utility that is slightly easier to use than the method in the KB
articles:

If I understand you correctly, IE does not come up at all
so it's not a question of network connectivity yet. Just
IE won't run.

First thing to do is to open AntiSpy and select Advanced
Tools then System Explorers then Find the Internet
Explorer section. Under IE BHOs, Highlight each entry and
select Block This BHO. Do them all even if they have
pretty stars next to them.

Then back to System Explorers then go to IE Settings and
select Restore All IE Default Settings.

Then back to System Explorer and then go to IE Toolbars
and Block all toolbars the same way you blocked the BHOs.

Now open a cmd window. (Start, Run, cmd, OK) and type:

sfc /scannow

When that finishes reboot and try IE again.

If it still won't work then check out the script
suggestion by Cheryl G. on:

On my daughter's machine we loaded Firefox via a CD and
were able to get back on line so we could get virus scans
and downloads.

HijackThis is another good program to run. It will fit on
a floppy.

Get HijackThis.exe from
http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/hjt199//HijackThis.exe

Save it to C:\hjt (new folder) then Open it and select
Scan and Save Log.

I'm getting a lot of flak from people about asking for
logs to be sent to me so if you prefer we can clog up this
forum with the log or just send it to me at
(e-mail address removed). Hopefully I will see it.

Finally if you still suspect a connectivity problem then
run winsockxpfix.exe.

It will also fit on a floppy.
