There is one problem, your problem has not been described, except for the
title that says "no connection".
Check to make sure programs such as Outlook Express or Internet Explorer is
working online. Click File > and ensure that Work Offline is not checked.

If the problem persist, uninstall Microsoft AntiSpyware, delete the Program
Files folder for Microsoft AntiSpyware under c:\Program files restart the
computer and reinstall to a non-default location such as c:\msas.

The servers are down.

I opened up my PC just now and got the wee box saying there was an update
and did I want to install it? I said yes and within a few seconds it said
the latest version was downloaded and installed. I looked in Help and it
still showed the Version 5783 installed on 8/12. When I asked MSAS to
Check for updates it couldn't connect. Are these servers down or what sent
the message?

Spyware Definition Version: 5783 (12/8/2005 8:04:56 PM)

That's the eighth of December. Your definitions are up to date. The word is
that there is a server problem, but we're talking about a server farm...many
servers and some may work.

I'm frankly amazed you got that update but rejoice. This the season. ;-)

There are program updates (upgrades) and signature definition updates... you
undoubtedly got the program update to:
Microsoft AntiSpyware Version: 1.0.701
This version expires on: 7/31/2006

No - I am well up-to-date with my updates! I got the signatures definitions
on the 8th and installed 701 a couple of days after it came out. This is
why I was surprised to get the offer of new definitions, but the process
went through so quickly that it was sort of obvious I didn't really get a
download and install. It was strange the box came up though.

I've had this problem now for over a week; my last update occurred on Dec.1.
What gives with your servers?? I would expect a company like MS would have
unlimited backup for it's network servers. Especially if they're to be used
for security systems like MSAS!!

Everybody OK now?

I believe this was a router problem of some sort. The servers were
reachable by many folks all the time, but clearly some had problems.

No, I still can't get a connection to the updater. Is there something I
need to do at my end to make it work?

What happens? There won't be new definitions before thursday, most
likely--but you shouldn't get an error message.

Make sure neither IE nor OE are set to "work offline", and consider setting
"automatically detect" in the proxy settings for the Internet connection,

I still get the message "Warning, could not connect to the internet". I
uninstalled and reinstalled MSAS - same problem, only now it is at the
original definition level - 5773.
Both IE and OE do not have Work Offline selected, and "automatically
detect" is selected. Is it possible I have a setting somewhere that is
blocking access to the Updater site? I see my modem doing a quick blink just
before I get the error message. I am going through a router.
Thanks.

Got it working!! I uninstalled ZoneAlarm and now it works, even though I did
not have ZA running before. Seems ZA has some settings that remain even when
shutdown. Thanks.

Thanks, Harry - I was about to reply that a software firewall could cause
that symptom when I read your next message instead.

If it is any consolation, Adobe's updater is, perhaps worse. If it is
explicitly blocked by a firewall, it replies "No updates available."

Beta2 will not have these issues--it will use autoupdate.
