I can't access the internet on only my HP760 with XP home
edition, Linksys adapter, BEFSX41 router, I can't get a
DHCP IP from the router and it appears that XP is
assigning an IP in the 169.254 space instead of getting a
192.168.1.10x IP address even though I am set to obtain
an IP automatically up TCP/IP properties. I can talk,
ping to other PCs with Win98, NT, on the network if I
manually assign an IP i.e. 192.168.1.10x, but still can't
hit the internet. All other PCs mentioned no problem.
Have swapped ports on router-same problem. When I
run "repair" on the connection I do get the error "repair
operation failed: renewing the IP address"

I'm baffled

Greetings ben

Addresses in the range 169.254.0.0 to 169.254.255.255 means your machine is configured to use an ip address, do not have a static address, and are unable to obtain an ip address automatically. Make sure your machines are connected to the LAN ports on the router instead of the WAN and Uplink port. Ensure the network cables are properly connected to and from the router and the machine. Try another network cable, it could be a defective cable which can cause problem obtaining a IP address automatically

I had to goto connection properties and under the general tab click configure and then advanced and and under conection type had to try the different options mine was 10baseT full duplex. Not sure if this helps cause it took me quite a few days to find this solution and in the process discovered there were many reasons to get that ip, another was to uninstally tcp/ip protocal then reinstall it, hope that helps.
