I upgraded a machine running 98se to Windows 2000
Professional (we have an upgrade disc so "clean install
not possible). We have a simple peer-to-peer network.
After the upgrade the computer can "see" the network but
is unable to access the Internet. (you get the
page/server not found)
The machines all connet to a hub-router-DSL which allows
them to access the Internet. Is there some setting that
needs to be turned on? I have removed Norton AntiVirus
and Zone Alarm from the system. Any suggestiosn would be
appreciated

A clean install *IS* possible.

You start with the Windows 2000 CD-ROM in the drive. Reboot the machine,
when prompted, the machine will look for previous installations. If Win98
is on your machine it should qualify. If you have a copy of Windows 98 on a
CD, insert it when prompted.

As to your networking question . . .
Check to see if all of your machines have the same WORKGROUP name and each
machine has it's own specific name . . . then, IF you are connected to a
router, make sure that your IP settings are set to obtain an IP address
automatically and that all of the other settings are also unchecked. The
router does the work for you.

IF you are connected to a hub/switch (which is an altogether different
issue), you still should be able to see your other machines on your network
IF you are in the same workgroup and have given each machine it's own
specific name. With a hub/switch you will need to assign IPs to share,
unless you are using a proxy server . . .

Your problem seems to be connecting to the internet with the Win2K machine .
.. . so, the logical step would be to make sure that your IP settings are
configured properly for your network. The main quesiton I have is it a
ROUTER or a HUB or a SWITCH? They are *not* the same.
