After I shut the computer for the first time after
installing spyware explorer does not connect. I do have a
connection on my wireless network but the main computer
does not get in the internet. Any solutions for that?

Yup.

Tools > Real-time Protection > Internet Agent > View
Internet Agent Checkpoints.

Deactivate WiFi Connection checkpoint.

Did you, in fact, clean some spyware?

Try this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892350

If this works, I'd be interested to see 1) what version of Microsoft
Antispyware you are running (Help, about)

and 2) what the content of your cleaner.log file--usually c:\program
files\microsoft antispyware\cleaner.log--indicates about what was cleaned.

This is a simple text file, and you can open it in notepad and cut and paste
into a reply in these groups.

I ran MS Spyware, it found 4 files. I deleted them. After
a restart, no internet was available. I unistalled MS
spyware thinking it was blocking my inet connection. I
checked with the router manufacturer to make sure I had
all the correct IP and DNS. All is OK but no inet yet.
I'm pretty sure something got changed and cut the browser
connectivity.

What do you advise me to do if I don't have the spyware
and/or internet connection?

Follow the KB article's instructions.

If you are on XP, I'll save you some reading time:

Go to a command prompt, and type netsh winsock reset
and restart the system.

If the winsock reset works, I'd be interested in the details I asked
for--what version of Microsft Antispyware, and what specific items were
cleaned.

The new build is supposed to reduce the incidence of winsock breakage in
spyware cleaning, so I'd like to know what bugs are involved when it is
still happening.

OK - then we are looking at some other issue. Let me go back and reread the
thread and see whether I've got useful ideas!

Can you describe the network? I understand you have a router, and a "main
computer?" Is the "main computer" the one which now does not connect to the
Internet?

Are there other computers?

Is the connection between the "main computer" and the router wireless or
wired?

I take it you are able to look at the routers status pages. Do they show
that you are successfully connected to your ISP?

Can you try these two commands from the computer which isn't conneting to
the Internet?

At a command prompt:

ping www.upenn.edu <enter>

ping 63.211.66.36 <enter>

See whether you get "reply" responses to these commands, and let me know
which, if either.

Thanks for your help.
The network is a roadrunner ISP connected to a wireless
router. The main computer, which is wired to the router is
the one not connecting to the internet. I can see the
network icon showing "connected". Plus using my laptop
with wireless conncetion internet works fine.
I tried the ping commands and got:
"transmit failed, error code 1" 4 times.

Stats are: Sent=4, Received=0, Lost =4

Can you confirm what version of Windows and Service pack level are on
"main"--is this XP, SP2, or another version?

A reset of TCP/IP may also be worth trying:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357/?sd=RMVP

Here's a troubleshooting article for basic small network connectivity
issues:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308007

If you go to a command prompt and type:

ipconfig /renew

and hit enter, what response do you get.

Here's one way to capture that response:

ipconfig /renew >filename.txt
notepad filename.txt

Then copy and paste the result from notepad into a response to this message.

If the command errors out, I'm not sure the result will be captured--just
retype it, I guess!

Windows is XP.

I tried the reset, here is the error message I got:
"Windows IP Configuration

The operation failed as no adapter is in the state
permisible for this operation"

Let me know and thanks again.

What service pack level?

(see properties of My Computer--listed in text under "System:")

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259

lists your particular error message, among others, as a sign of winsock
corruption---so it looks like we haven't licked that yet, and that, in fact,
a corrupted winsock stack IS at the root of your problem.

You can call Microsoft Product Support Services (pss) and get direct free
phone help for this issue--and that may help:

If you are in the United States or Canada, call 1-866-pcsafety. Elsewhere,
call your local Microsoft subsidiary or paid support number, and ask for the
free help for virus removal or security-patch related issues.

The article above, or the one I cited earlier in this thread, should be able
to get this fixed for you--but you may well benefit from going through this
with a Microsoft staffer on the other end of the phone.

Please list the names of the four items deleted. Check the MSAS logs if you
have forgotten.

I am having the same problem, plus Microsoft Restore will
not restore to the many previous restore points I have.
Help!
