I have noticed the new(?) "no install" ammended to posts. Please
explain what this means. I couldn't find a faq so I will just post
the question. Appreciate any help in advance.

I take it to mean that the program does not come packaged in an
automatic installer; instead you install/extract it yourself from an
archive file.

Hi,

My take on this, is that the file/program does not need to be installed.
You download the program and run it...thus 'No install'.

Just my 2cents,

Kevin

Usually programs with an installer write to your registry.
There is always the risk that they can accidently do
serious damage. Thus programs that do not have a
"black box" installer are less of a risk. This does
not prevent them from being malicious when executed,
but it reduces the risk of accidental damage.

Cheers,

Nor does it mean that "no install" programs do *not* make registry
entries.

The replies make me think it's best to be careful of a new program
regardless of install or no install status. Use Total Uninstall before doing
anything. ;)

True. In addition, always seeing with TUN the bunch of registry entries made
by these so called "no install", now I think that the install progs are much
safer for people in general, because they come with an uninstall applet
which can remove many, if not all, their registry entries.
With these "no installs" people think it's enough to delete some folder,
ignoring all the junk left (not only the added keys, but, even more
important, the modifications in the existing keys).

ZipInstaller could always be used to "install" the "no install"
programs.

ZipInstaller
The ZipInstaller utility installs and uninstalls applications and
utilities that do not provide an internal installation program. It
automatically extracts all files from the Zip file, copies them to the
destination folder you select, creates shortcuts in the start menu and
in your desktop, and adds an uninstall module to allow you to
automatically remove the software in the future.
