I have captured and edited a movie using MM and saved it in AVI format. I
want to burn to a DVD, and I was told that I need to convert the file to
MPEG2 so that it would be recognised by my DVD player. So I downloaded a few
converters to try - ConvertMovie 1.2 and WinAVI Video Converter. I also
needed to download a codec which I assume has helped because ConvertMovie
worked and converted the AVI file to MPG. Now when I try to copy the file to
DVD (I am using Windows XP) it says that "Windows encountered a problem when
trying to copy this file".
I have trialled Ulead Movie Factory but wanted to avoid going this way due
to not wanting to pay for another program when all I want to do is burn to a
DVD after using MM. Please help me as I think I am going to lose my sanity
before I ever figure this out!!!!!!

It's not quite as easy as converting the file to an mpeg2. A dvd player
needs vob files to play properly, so what you need is a dvd authoring
programme. Now most of these need to be purchased, but it might be you have
one on your pc as you have a dvd burner.
The likes of nero and roxio will do it, do you have one of these?

Lastly, windows does not support drag and drop to dvd, and using this method
will not make a dvd which will play on a dvd player anyway, for the reasons
above.

Ask away if this is unclear, or you need mroe help with the programmes you
have.

I have NTI CD & DVD Maker 6.5 Gold but the DVD Authoring button is greyed out
and not available (this program came with my PC). As I mentioned earlier, I
trialled Ulead Movie Factory but wanted to avoid the expense of buying
another program just to burn a DVD. It seems I don't have an option though.
In your opinion, would Nero or Roxio or Sonic MyDVD be a better program to
purchase? Thanks so much for your help.

I second the vote, imagine that, for Movie Factory.
But I also agree with Graham that it may be cheaper for you to upgrade to
the full version of NTI instead.

I am having this same problem, and your reply was very useful to me...
however, I have Nero, but I cannot seem to determine where or whether it has
a dvd authoring programme as you mentioned. Do you know where this would be
located within Nero, or how I can find out for sure if I have it?

Hi Brooke
If you have the full retail version of Nero then you should have "Nero
Vision Express" (Don't confuse this with Nero Express which is NOT the same
thing) Nero Vision Express is the program needed to author a DVD. To
determine if you have it simply open Nero Start Smart, make sure DVD is
selected in the dropdown box at the top, and click the videos icon. If you
have an option to "Make a DVD Movie" or something to that effect then you
have Nero Vision Express, if not then you don't.
If you have a free version of Nero that came with the computer or the DVD
Writer you "probably" do not have NVE.
If you downloaded the trial from their website you definitely don't have
NVE.

For more info on Nero as well as other DVD Authoring programs see the "DVD
Creation" section of my website.
