For some reason now when I turn on my computer there are
no icons visible and no task bar or start menu. I can
open the task manager and get to all my files through the
run as option. This is all well and good but I would
really like my icons back. Does anyone know just what is
going on and how I can fix this problem?

I AM NOT SURE IF I UNDERSTAND YOU CORRECTLY, THIS IS WHAT
I HAVE/DO.MAYBE TWEAK UI FRO MS IS WHAT YOU NEED.

I USE THE TASK BAR TO GET TO THE VARIOUS PAGES USING ICONS
PLACED THERE, NOT ON THE DESKTOP WHICH I KEEP CLEAR.

WHEN I AM AT A PAGE, I HIT THE CREATE SHORTCUT BUTTON, AN
ICON IS CREATED ON THE DESKTOP.

DRAG THE ICON TO THE TASK BAR AND PLACE IT.

NOW OCCASIONALLY, THINGS GET SUCH THAT THE INDIVIDUAL
ICONS ARE ERASED AND IN THEIR PLACE IS THE GENERIC "E".

TO GET THEM BACK TO THE ICONS, I RETURN TO THE PAGES,
CLICK THE CREATE SHORTCUT, GET TO THE START MENU AND
CLICK "TWEAK UI" (FOUND IN THE MS DOWNLOADS FOR FREE) AND
CLICK "REPAIR ICONS". HIT THE REPAIR NOW BUTTON AND YOU
WILL SEE THE ICONS RETURN TO THE DESKTOP AS WELL AS THE
TASK BAR. DELETE THE DESKTOP ICON IF YOU WANT, THE TASK
BAR ICON REMAINS.

I HOPE THIS IS WHAT YOU WANTED AND IT HELPS YOU. BEEN
THERE, DONE THAT......

You might try doing a system restore to a point where you
did have icons on the desktop. This would reset your
settings that have eliminated the icons and task bar.
