Thanks for your reply. I ran the command they recommend and got the error
message "DllRegServer in SHDOCVW.DLL failed. Return code 0x80070005".
However, I did this from my wife's account, which is a limited one. When I
did it from my own (administrator) account, it succeeded, but the history is
still blank in her account, even after I surfed to a few sites.
I think this may have something to do with the fact that I demoted my wife's
account from an administrator to a limited account a while ago. The history
is also blank on my daughter's account, where I did the same thing.

There are utilities that clear the history on exit so no one can see where
you have been- look to see if one has been installed or it is part of a
programs settings that has been activated for that account. For example I
think its an option in powertools.

CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ should be able to clear the History
and the index.dat file. Just check the appropriate boxes and run it.
Free History Eraser from
http://smartprotector.com/eraser/free-history-eraser.htm will delete the
History folder (and the index.dat file) and a new one will be created when
you restart.
Or the History folder can be deleted manually:

My problem is not to erase history. It is that history is not displaying *at
all* on my wife's account. I went to her history folder and erased
everything there. Sure enough Windows recreated an index.dat file, but still
nothing is displayed in her version of IE. In response to Ivee's
contribution, she does have stuff filled in in AutoComplete.
