No High Definition Sound

This seems to be a common problem.
I upgraded to Vista. I have tried all drivers at realtek and R1.56 works in
as much as it detects when I plug in my speakers and gives the appearance of
outputting sound. But nothing is audible.

I have gigabyte motherboard GA-8I945PL-G with onboard sound ALC882 high
definition

Vista may default itself to SPDIF interface playback (it does in my case).
Please try making sure that Speakers/headphone is the default playback.

To change, right click on the volume icon next to the clock and select
Playback Devices. CLick on Speaker/Headphone and select Set Default.

REstart Windows Media player (or whatever audio program you use). :)

I don't if this will help, but it's worth a try.

After you resume a Windows Vista-based computer from sleep or from hibernation and then restart
the computer, a high definition audio (HDA) device may no longer work. The device may be a
sound device or a modem. You may see an "X" appear on the speaker icon in the notification
area.

Because of this problem, you no longer hear any sound, or you cannot use the modem.

I also have the same problem with my sound device. Windows XP working
prfectly, installed Vista...no sound, period. I did a right click on the
volume icon next to the clock and selected Playback Devices. A headphone
option comes up, but says it is not plugged in and I am not given the option
to set default, I can only open properties which tells me the device is
working??? I am so confused. Please help

Another message just popped up: no audio output device is installed. My
speakers that worked with XP yesterday are plugged in, but not recognized.
Please help!

Lulu,

I believe the "no audio output device" refers to your sound card. You may
need to update the drivers or you may need to check to see if the device is
working in the Device Manager. Right click on COMPUTER, select MANAGE, and
double click Device Manager and look for "sound, video and game controller."

Thanks for the reply; I checked with the device manager and it says that the
device is working properly, and that the driver is up to date. What next? Any
suggestions?

Had the same problem with Vista...(no audio device installed)
Try this it works.........first go to microsoft and install the upgrade
(KB929685).....then go to the control panel>system>device
manager.....highlight the sound controller.......uninstall the High
Defination Sound Device and uninstall the driver (check box)........restart
the computer and the system will reinstall both and the upgrade prevents it
from happening again.

Also, try this. Go to Hardware and Sounds in Control Panel, Click Manage
Audio Devices. Click on each of the items that control your "Speakers" and
click the "Properties" button at the bottom. Under "Advanced" uncheck the
boxes under exclusive mode. Now go back in to the "Speakers" control that
lists your sound card. Click "Properties". Click "Advanced". Now recheck the
boxes under "Exclusive Mode". Now hit the "test" button. Your sound should
now work.

This worked for me in dealing with this problem.

Hope this helps.

Ok i got my sound working. As best I can remember this is what i did:
1> Install R1.56 drivers.
2> Set the sound device to speakers not realtek digital output.
3> reboot computer
4> Plug in speakers. Note speakers are recognised and chose rear speaker (I
think). Still no sound.
5> Plug in headphones. Headphones are recognised and tell manager that these
are headphone. At this point my headphones have sound even though my speakers
do not.
5> Unplug headpphones and plug speakers into headphone socket.
Now I have sound from my speakers.

No this is all a load of BS & it should be so hard but it actually works.
Dunno what i'd do if I actually wanted to use surround sound.

Regards
Tony
