I did a clean install on a Toshiba Satellite Laptop a couple of weeks ago
but the Help and Support button and System information (Start>All
Programs>Accessories>Syetem Tools>System Information) do not work. When I
click Start>Help and Support the hard disk thrashes a few seconds and then
nothing. Clicking on System Information does even less.

I have downloaded all critical updates and I did a complete re-install of
XP. However, there was a short period before I installed AVG aiti-virus
software but a complete scan cleaned off all viruses that had been received
in email. MSBLAST.EXE and DLLHOST.EXE had been received but AFAIK the system
wasn't infected.

The system otherwise works fine.

If I can't resolve this issue, I am not averse to doing a clean install
again except for the activation issue. Does anyone know how to do this
without invalidating the activation?

Thanks

Edwin

Give Doug's site a try, below. Click on XP-FIXES, then on "Fix XP HELP"

Thanks for the site. Unfortunately the Fix XP help script didn't fix the
problem.

I checked the AVG Virus Vault and I found that the MSBLAST.EXE and
DLLHOST.EXE viruses were found in the System32 folder so my system was
probably damaged by one of these.

Does anyone have any clues on how to repair a system once the viruses have
been removed?

Thanks

Edwin

I tried everything, restoring help files, restoring registry, everything. I
finally reinstalled everything taking care to not get a virus until I had
the system updated and protected. It all works properly now.

This is the first time I've gotten infected just by being hooked up to the
net. Bummer.

There was no problem at all re-activating with the same product ID. I
haven't changed any hardware so no-prob.

Thanks for the help.

The windows site has info on how to remove those infected files.I removed the DLLHOST.EXE file found in your windows system 32 folder. There are two files that read read dllhost remove the one in caps.Type in the name of the virus and windows has some tips on removal.Make sure you also have a firewall installed.I had some of the same problems and had to remove my system restore files because even after removal the virus remained in there.
