In the past few months I have installed a USB Modem, an
analog capture card, new RAM, a new H-D, a DVD burner and
a firewire card. All of them work exactly as they should,
and none of them have caused any problems. Where did I go
wrong?

That reminds me of the story about the optimist who fell from the 10th story
window. As he passed the 2nd floor window he said, "so far, so good".

Well, have you tried to shut it off and on several times when installing? Or
maybe, pick up the computer while it is writing to the hard drive, and
dropping it real hard..............

Yeah, I had the same problem.
Then I realized my perspective was skewed by visiting this newsgroup on a
daily basis. After all, the purpose of this newsgroup is to help people who
are having problems.
For every person posting their problems here, there are thousands like you
and I who have had none.
Knock on wood, of course.

I installed XP about 4 months after it was released. I have never had a
problem I could blame on XP except the floppy drive issue. I was able to fix
that by installing a different driver.
