Hi,

Apparently AVG will cease to offer their free version from Jan. 18th.

Does it exist other *good* (lean on resources and footprint but smart)
freeware antivirus software?

regards

Heh. I'm willing to wager that Grisoft loses half their customer base
in the next few days. <lol>

When it is said no longer anymore is it meant the programme or the updates
or both?

Sorry? If you visit the above link, you will see that the current
version is now 7.5. Version 7.1 will no longer be supported, and it is
safe to assume that means both program code and virus database updates.

Uninstall the old one, and then install the new one.

I also asked a question like this in another newsgroup, and was advised to
go to the v7.5, I did this, and all appears fine (nicer, if anything) BUT
since then I have been having problems with my puter dropping out, locking
up and/or crashing. i do not know if the 2 are connected; I'm going to
continue using it for a short while and try a couple of other installation
methods (I installed as Admin, in 'safe mode' [XP Pro]) and see if this
changes the problems.
I will report back, but just in case, anyone have any other
recommendations..avast has been mentioned to me??
TIA

I've been using it for over 2 weeks now no problems here.
The recommended method if going from 7.1 to 7.5 is to do a repair.
