No files visible in Explore

When I open Explorer I can see the folders in the left hand pane but no
files in the right hand pane.
This is for all folders except: WINNT, Programme files and Recylce bin

Any ideas how to fix it - I've done a check on display options and also a
check on system files off the install disk (sfc/scanow) and found nothing
