no file extensions

Suddenly when I save pictures the file extension is no
longer attached to the file. The pictures are saved as
a "file". The file type in the dialog box says save as a
jpeg but it really does not happen that way any longer.
If I manually tupe in the ".jpg" after the picture name
the pictures are saved normally but what a pain in the
keyboard. My desktop and laptop both have this problem
with "XP home" now.

Last time I reloaded windows but that is a real pain also.

Anyn one have any ideas on what might have happened and
how to correct it?

Thanks for your input.
