Just wanted to post the answer to this one for anyone who's been as
frustrated by it as I have!! From searching google, there appears to
be lots of people with the problem, but none with the solution.

The fax icon is supposed to appear when a modem is installed but I
have spent far too long trying to solve why it would not appear on the
ONLY machine I need it to.

And the answer......

Missing "fax.cpl" file from your system32 directory. I copied this
from another machine and all is now well.

:-)

Hopefully this will save someone else the time that I wasted!!

The .cpl extension is the standard for any file that represents an icon in
the Control Panel. Fax icon's cpl file is fax.cpl. When this file is corrupt
or deleted by accident the icon doesn't appear. So replacing the fax.cpl
onto system32 directory makes the fax icon re-appear. I guess your file also
might have got deleted by accident.

The link http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=173132 has more details. The
info in the link is useful & applicable here though it doesn't apply to
Win2K per se.
