What application are you using to play DVDs?
What *version* of WIndows XP do you have?
(Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional Edition, Windows XP Media
Center Edition...)

I have windows xp home edition, I tried playing the dvd on windows media
player, played fine just no sound. Tried playing on Cine Player would not
play at all.

What version of Media Player?

If 11, try uninstalling it and reverting back to 10.
If 10, try re-installing 'CinePlayer'.

I contacted dell and they fixed the problem very efficiently. They
have a download for dell users that took about 5 minutes and now
everything works great! Thanks anyway Shenan.

I am happy they got it fixed for you.
If you do not mind - can you point me to the patch they told you to
download?
Also - if you do not mind - are you running Media Player 11 and/or Internet
Explorer 7.0?

I ask the former in case anyone else searches and gets to this thread
through something like google groups and I ask the latter for my own
curiosity as to what might have caused the issue - because previously I have
personally ran into Dell systems where certain things were dying because of
Media Player 11.

The patch number for the download is R142470, I have Media Player
10 and Internet Explorer 6.0. I hope that helps everyone else with
this problem. The download fixed Cineplayer and WMP.

Thanks for letting us know how it got fixed, sehendrick!
