I am having a problem with a sbs 2000 installation.
I got a Compaq proliant server ML370 T01 P1000 with 1,5Gb
ram, 4*36GB HDs in raid 5, all the workstations (17 in
number) are windows 98 first or second edition.
The server acts a domain controller, dhcp, wins and of
course dns. About the software is an ISA, terminal server
in application mode, exchange (very light use, only 2 mail
boxes) and also file server and is running on service pack
4. For virus protection has mcafee net shield 4.5.0 and the
workstations have mcafee viruscan 4.51
The network switch is a HP procurve 2324 j4818a
The problem is that very often when a workstation tries to
log on to domain I get the message: no domain server was
available. Many times the problem is resolved by restarting
the net logon service, other times I need to restart the
server (maybe more than one restart). I also noticed that
some times the problem stop to exist if I try to logon
after a few minutes with out any extra action.
When I can't logon on the domain I can still access the
internet through ISA server witch means that there is
TCP/IP connectivity.
I made a test by adding the ipx protocol as is suggested in
knowledge base article KB152791 with out any result.
I updated the firmware on the HP switch with the latest
version and I checked that all the pcs and the server are
free of virus and spyware.
I can't find any pattern that applies to that problem it
seems totally random so can't even make any proper test.
Please advice.
