Have Sony PC with XP home; has been okay until yesterday
when I suddenly get an error when booting up:
"There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into
drive\Device\Harddisk\DR4."
Can anyone tell me what causes this? When i click one of
the buttons it goes on to loading XP but if I
click "continue" it just repeats the error message.
Thanks in advance for your help. Don

Hi Don,

Could you please post back with a brief description of your system, and any
recent changes/installations you have made?

My system is a Sony VAIO with 512MB and using XP Home;
the only program I have installed recently was Zone Alarm
Pro4, and I did not have any problems after installing
it. Problem just came up yesterday and again today. I do
not know enough about computers to know what else to say;
could it be a problem with the PC itself? Thanks for
your reponse, I need all the help I can get. Don

Hi Don,

What I was looking for was a description of your system - what sort of
drives and how they are connected. Have you added any hardware to this
system since you purchased it? Your error message sounds like it is looking
for a boot drive on a controller card. Have you made any BIOS settings
changes?

Thanks Rick, My Sony VAIO is only a few months old and
has the hard drive partitioned into two drives. I have
not make any changes (don't really know how to) to any of
the hardware. There is a 3.5" floppy drive and two CD-
ROM drives, one is CD-R. Everything is just as it
arrived. My Printer is connected by a USB port and it
has been working all along. Everything else is pretty
standard, the monitor and speakers are plugged in just as
they were the day I set it up about six months ago. This
error message just suddenly appeared, and it is still
coming up; it goes away after I click on Cancel a couple
of times. Do you think I should try to contact SONY? I
have not had any contact with them yet, and hoped I would
not have any problems to take to them. Your assistance
is sincerely appreciated. Don

Hi,

Well, before you contact Sony, I'd try to figure out if it's something
loading at boot.

Rick, Thanks very much for your suggestions, I will give
them a try. In talking to one of my former students
yesterday he gave me a clue that may be the problem. I
bought an Iomega USB pen drive for my brother, and just
put it on my PC to try it out; it seems the PC may now be
looking for that item, so I will have to see if I can
find a way to remove whatever it is looking for. I
really do appreciate your efforts to help; I am learning
a lot from reading posts on this newsgroup. Don
