no dial tone

My internal modem connects but there is no dial up tone

In the control panel open the Phone and Modem folder, modems tab, properties, check
the speaker volume.

1. Do you get a dial tone when you plug an other phone into that line?
Have you check to be sure you have the phone line plugged into the correct
jack on the computer? Remember there are two jacks on the computer, one for
the wall line and one for a spare phone.
